How to Build a Waterfall That Looks Natural

Build a WaterfallIn our last article “The Art of Building Backyard Waterfalls” we discussed important factors you need to think about before you start to build a waterfall. We also talked about the most important factor which is the height, width, and depth of the waterfall design. Make sure to review these important factors before you start to build a waterfall by yourself! Once you are ready, let’s jump and discuss factors that need to be considered when you build a waterfall.

Decide on Your Boulder Size

The size of your boulders is very important. If you use boulders that are too small, your waterfall will look like water flowing over small pebbles. Typically the larger the boulders and spillways, the more dramatic the waterfall looks. For example, a small 2-foot waterfall should incorporate at least two large 2-3 foot sized boulders while a 4-foot waterfall should use at least three boulders of that size or larger.

Decide on Your Water Pump Size

You might not think about it but a waterfall can often have too much water flowing over rocks. A large pump can create excessive water flow, noise, and splashing which can take away from the peaceful aesthetics of a natural waterfall. We always build a waterfall that is pleasant and meanders over rocks and spillways in a calm and peaceful manner. You do not need a mini Niagara Falls in order to make your backyard waterfall more dramatic! Remember, the larger the boulders and the wider your spillways, the higher the volume of water that will be needed in order to create a natural waterfall effect.

Decide on Either a Slope or Retaining Wall

The back of your waterfall will need either a slope or a retaining wall to ground it. Typically you should only use a retaining wall if space is limited or if the wall is part of your landscape design. When you have a slope behind your waterfall you create room for additional garden landscaping opportunities which will make your waterfall look more natural. It’s important to remember to landscape these slopes to in order to prevent erosion and also create water run-off paths to channel and drain rainwater when it is raining.

Design Landscaping That Looks Natural

Build a WaterfallTo build a natural looking waterfall we often install plants that will grow over the edges of the waterfall and in between the waterfall’s rocks and boulders just like what you see in nature. You can use regular plants around the waterfall and then use aquatic plants within the waterfall catch-pools. If you have a taller waterfall with a retaining wall behind it, then you will absolutely want to use a mixture of large regular and aquatic plants in and around your waterfall which will help hide the retaining wall. Let your plants grow out and get unruly. The wilder the plants look, the more natural your waterfall will look.

Don’t Forget Waterfall Lighting

Lighting is the secret ingredient for building a waterfall. Waterfalls always look great during the day, but at night a well-lit waterfall with lighting effects creates a gorgeous image of dancing reflections of light across the rocks and surrounding landscape. Lighting design requires a little bit of talent as you need to decide on the number of lights and where they will be placed. Think about lighting up every cascade of water over the spillway and make sure that the lighting fixture is completely submerged and has at least three inches of water above it.

Underwater lighting magnifies the effect of dancing light and shadows across the rocks and surrounding plants. When you think about it, we often work during the day and it is only in the evenings that we can appreciate our backyard waterfall, so lighting is a very important aesthetic factor! We recommend LED underwater lights as these lights use less energy and can project a variety of colors depending on your preference.

Building a waterfall is not easy, but the reward of enjoying the sights and sounds of a beautiful well-lit waterfall in the evening is unforgettable.

The Art of Building Backyard Waterfalls

Backyard Waterfalls LAWhen looking at backyard waterfalls built by hand, we have all seen those “WOW” waterfalls that take our breath away with their beauty and we have also seen those “what were they thinking” waterfall designs that look unnatural and just plain ugly. So what exactly are the design and landscaping secrets that we use to make beautiful, natural looking backyard waterfalls?

Step 1: Think About the Flow of Water

When building a backyard waterfall and pond it’s important to ask yourself “how will the water flow” at every step in the design process. Boulders and rocks should be placed in a way that you know exactly how the water will cascade off of the upper boulders and down to the rocks below. Going through this process of thinking how the water will flow off of spillways and the path it will take flowing through the rocks below is essential for designing a beautiful backyard waterfall.

Although this all may sound easy, there are some important factors to consider before you start:

  • How tall, wide and deep do you want your waterfall?
  • How many spillways will you have?
  • How big are your boulders?
  • What is your pump size?
  • Do you have a natural slope or retaining wall?
  • Where will your waterfall be placed for easy viewing?
  • How will you place your lights?

Remember, all of these items need to be decided before you start building a backyard waterfall as they all relate to one another. As you can see, designing a waterfall requires some initial planning, but these steps are critical to building a waterfall that looks aesthetically pleasing natural water feature.

Step 2: Consider Your Waterfall Dimensions Carefully

Waterfall dimensions are an important factor to designing a waterfall as the height and flow of water need to be appropriate for the pond and pump. A tall 5-foot waterfall just does not look that great flowing into a small 6 by 8-foot pond. The waterfall must be in proportion to the side slopes on either side of the waterfall. If the waterfall is too high in relationship to the side slopes, your backyard waterfall will look like a pyramid or narrow hill and will end up looking unnatural.

Pondless Waterfall

Example of a Pondless Waterfall

Of course, the size of the waterfall should also be proportional to the pond below. Typically a small waterfall flows into a medium sized pond and a large waterfall should have a larger sized pond. If you are not interested in installing a pond, you can also consider a pondless waterfall which simply recirculates the water back up to the waterfall spillway.

The depth of your backyard waterfall is another important factor. The waterfall depth determines how many cascades of water over spillways and large rocks that you are able to achieve. In general, the greater the distance from the top spillway to the pond or pondless basin, the more cascades, water direction changes and catch-pools can be incorporated into your waterfall design.

Ideas For Garden Water Features

Do you want to make a big impact with your garden this year? One of the best ways to bring nature into your garden is by installing a water feature. A waterfall, stream or beautiful Koi pond is the perfect way to bring the sights and sounds of water into your garden landscape. Plus, when done right, a water feature will improve your property value as well as become an enjoyable, long-lasting focal point in your garden.

When thinking about a garden water feature, some people naturally consider installing a prefabricated fountain or DIY pond. Yet, while there are many styles of ready-made fountains and ponds on the market, they can sometimes look odd or out of place in a natural environment.

Water Features That Enhance The Natural Surroundings

We believe that the best option for designing a water feature in your garden is to actually construct the water feature right into the garden landscape. This means that the waterfall, stream or pond is carved into the landscape in a way that enhances your garden while living in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

Water Feature Design Examples

From gushing waterfalls to trickling streams and beautiful koi ponds, here are some great ideas for garden water features.

Pool and Patio Water Features

Another technique for bringing water into your garden landscape is to consider integrating a water feature into an existing swimming pool, patio or home architecture element. In this way, the natural beauty of water flows seamlessly into the man-made components of the outdoor space. The goal is to integrate the water feature in a way that feels completely natural and harmonious with the surrounding garden elements.

6 Tips for Fall Pond Maintenance

pond-maintenanceThe leaves start to change colors, the weather gets colder and before we know it Fall is here. And while we typically have mild winters in Southern California compared to the rest of the nation, it’s important that we take some steps to ensure that we will have a healthy fish pond come springtime.

Here are 6 tips for fall pond maintenance:

1.  Install Netting to Catch Falling Leaves

If your pond is underneath a tree or located near trees you can make your cleaning efforts easier by installing netting over your pond in order to catch falling leaves. Make sure the netting is above your pond surface.

2. Clean Out Your Skimmer

If you decide not to use netting then make sure that you clean your skimmer basket and empty it out daily. You will need to clean your skimmer basket more often at this time of year anyway.

3. Remove Debris

An increase in decaying leaves and shrubs can produce toxic gases and change the water balance in your fish pond over time so it’s important to remove as much leaves and debris as possible.

4. Clean the Pond Bottom

Use a long handled pond net to clean the pond bottom of debris. Be gentle as you do not want to puncture your pond lining.

5. Check the Water Balance

A higher level of leaves and debris at this time of the year can affect your water balance. Make sure to test your oxygen, ammonia and nitrite levels. Doing a partial water change will also give your fish a cleaner environment over the winter. Don’t forget to use a water conditioner if your tap water contains chlorine or chloramines.

6. Trim Back Plants

Fall is a great time to divide and re-pot plants. Hardy plants can be pruned and you can trim back your aquatic plants, water lilies and stems to 2-3” above the base of the plant to keep dead foliage from decomposing into your pond.

Need some help with your pond maintenance?

With our complete cleaning service we will remove your fish to holding tanks, drain and power wash your pond, remove all sticks, leaves and debris, clean the filters, check the lighting, cut back plants and start the filling process.  When there is enough water in the pond we will acclimate and reintroduce your fish back into their brand new clean home.

Fall Fish Pond Clean-out Checklist

Fish Pond Cleanout

Fall is here and it’s a good time to think about doing a fish pond clean-out to prepare you fish for the winter months ahead. The process is fairly simple and can usually be done in one day but be prepared because it’s a messy and smelly job.

If you don’t have the time to do it yourself, just let us know and we will come out and do it for you. Call us at: 310-915-6600 or email ginger@sierrapacificdesign.com to schedule a Fall pond clean-out today.

Fall Fish Pond Clean-out Checklist

Fall represents a unique time of year when your pond can undergo dramatic changes in water temperature and water balance due to the change in weather and falling leaves and decaying plants.  Our Fall pond clean-out checklist will help you through the steps and if you need any assistance just give us a call.

Items you will need:

  • Buckets or containers to hold your fish
  • 26 feet of 1 ½” to 2” discharge hose
  • A high pressure nozzle for your garden hose or a pressure washer with 1500-2500 psi
  • Garden shears for trimming plants around the pond
  • Trash bin to collect leaves and debris
  • Rubber gloves
  • Wading boots

Pond Clean-out Steps

  • Drain the pond
    • Drain 1/3 to ½ of the pond water to remove contaminants and improve water conditions. Use the drained pond water to fill up your fish holding buckets
  • Catch and remove your fish
    • Transfer your fish into your temporary holding buckets
  • Remove debris
    • Remove leaves and debris and twigs from the pond basin by hand in order to protect your pond liner from tears
  • Prune plants
    • Trim back your water plants and prune dead stems to prevent decay. Water lily leaves and blooms should be clipped at the container and discarded. If your pond is near large trees you can consider hanging netting over your pond to catch the falling leaves.
  • Wash the pond basin
    • Wash the pond basin and rinse down and remove debris from rocks and gravel.
  • Clean the filters
    • Clean out the skimmer box and filters per the pump manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Refill the pond
    • Add in fresh water from your garden hose
  • De-chlorinate the water
    • Most city water contains chlorine and chloramines and should be dechlorinated before your fish are adding back into the new water.
  • Acclimate the fish
    • A pond clean-out can be stressful for fish. Slowly acclimate your pond fish to the new water temperature taking the fish holding buckets and floating them in the new pond water for approximately 15 minutes. Now dump some of the water from the holding container and replace it with the new pond water. Do this several times to allow your koi to get used to the new water. Once they are acclimated you can release your fish into their new clean and fresh environment.
  • Add beneficial bacteria
    • Condition your pond with bacterial additives specially formulated to work in cooler water temperatures.

Koi Pond Cleanout

Koi Fish and Colder Water

Some additional notes regarding water temperature. When water temperatures drop below 70°F, begin mixing your Koi fish diet with easy to digest wheat germ food.  At below 60°F, you should switch to wheat germ food completely.

Spending a little time now will save you a great deal of time and effort in the Spring and your fish and plants will appreciate it.
